This would be my last post for my journal as my group and I prepare for our finals. We already have a great plot in mind, the script is already halfway written and things are looking really good. I want to thank Ms Pat for being the fun, crazy and eccentric lecturer whose personality I have grew to love. From this course, I have discovered many things I didn't know about myself and the people around me. I learned public speaking, building confidence, accessing my emotions and many many other valuable lessons one could never learn in a conventional class. I definitely have learned a lot from THTR 101 and it was been a pleasure taking this course with Ms. Pat :)

Today, we all shared a few synopsis of the plays that we studied over the weekend. Jia Yun gave an overview of Hamlet, while everyone listened. Patrick told the story of the Merchant of Venice and Melissa shared Midsummer Night's Dream. For every synopsis, the genre was discussed eg fantasy, horror and so on. The background of the plays were also highlighted. After that, we were told to get into our groups and start discussing on the genre we wanted to do. We unanimously agreed not to do romance or anything like that. Instead, we thought of incorporating comedy into a horror or thriller based play. At the end of the class, Ms Pat spoke about commitment to the group and how we should all play our part. Patrick as our captain was to make sure that everyone attended and played our parts well. My group set a common time to meet and discuss our play.

It was a rainy and sleepy morning as I entered the Experimental Theater. A few students were late as the rain was causing massive jams everywhere. However, we started the class on the dot at 8am. We were told to take a few pieces of newspaper, sit in a large circle and read it. We each took turns to read the newspaper and the others would observe us. Everyone had a chance to do the same and it was quite amusing to see how everyone had different styles of reading newspaper. After everyone had their chance, we were told to put the newspaper behind us, and pretend to read it instead. I learned that we have to pay attention to details of using the prop, in this case the newspaper eg how we sit, how we flip the page and so on. Then, we moved on to carrying a large wooden box that was already in the room. When I lifted it, it was very heavy and I noticed that my back was slightly arched backward. I also struggled to walk across the room and passed it to the person on the opposite side. After everyone was done, we put the box away and pretended to carry it. This part was really fun and I tried to pretend that the imaginary box was really heavy and had my back arched and the whole works. Ms Pat told us to imagine the details of the prop even though it was not physically with us. After that, we spread across the room and we were told to close our eyes and imagine that we had things in our hands such as smelling a rose or bouncing a ball. Again, it was all about paying attention to details and being convincing about the prop that we are using even though we don't have it physically. Later, we gathered in our groups and were given overviews of Shakespeare's famous plays. We were to research the plays and discuss them with our groupmates :) |
